Stopped a few processes which dropped CPU usage a bit, but it still leapt back from 30% to 80-100% whenever I tried to do anything (chrome seemed to use lots when I was looking online for ideas, even shaking the mouse around seemed to shoot the CPU up to high levels. Realising I hadn't cleared the old drivers I booted into safe mode, uninstalled all the graphics drivers then reinstalled the new ones (clean install) and updated the drivers online. Although my resolutions updated, windows was still running extremely slowly, and looking at task manager showed my CPU usage at around 100%. On accessing system, which was running slowly, I installed drivers from the disk. When I first installed it and turned on my pc I thought it seemed to take a long time to boot up, but put it down to needing to get the drivers installed. My old graphics card recently died on me (XFX ATI Radeon HD 6990) and I got hold of a Gigabyte geforce GTX 970 g1 to replace it.
